The field of epigenetics involves the study of heritable changes in gene expression that occur in the absence of DNA sequence alterations. Two of the primary mechanisms responsible for epigenetic regulation include the fluid control of DNA methylation status and the posttranslational modification of histones. The resultant chromatin mark configurations are key elements in the establishment of gene expression profiles and chromatin states that determine a cell's phenotypic identity. Aberrant epigenetic signaling contributes to the genesis of many human diseases and disorders. As more is learned about reversing or modulating chromatin mark signatures, new opportunities for therapeutic intervention will likely be identified.
