Astrocyte A2B Receptors Regulate Brain Energy Metabolism

The mechanism(s) orchestrating the metabolic relationship between astrocytes and neurons, which ensures that neuronal energy needs are met, remains undefined. A new study by Theparambil et al. reports that astrocytic A2B receptors activate glucose metabolism through cAMP-PKA signaling to maintain brain metabolic activity. This study suggests that activation of A2B receptors may represent a possible therapeutic strategy to prolong brain health.
