The Retinoblastoma (Rb) protein is an abundant molecule in the nucleus of mammalian cells and is continuously present in cells regardless of whether the cell is in the G0 (growth factor absent) or proliferating stage of the cell cycle. It is the product of the Rb susceptibility gene; the protein itself is a negative regulator, controlling the passage of cells from G1 to S phase of the cell cycle. The action of the Rb protein is controlled by phosphorylation.
