Background
Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) couples increases in Ca2+ to fundamental responses in excitable cells including activation of ion channels, gene transcription and apoptosis. CaMKII is activated by angiotensin II-induced oxidation, which leads to apoptosis in cardiomyocytes. CaMKII activity is also enhanced by pro-oxidant conditions, and the oxidation of paired regulatory domain methionine residues sustains CaMKII activity in the absence of Ca2+/CaM.
