Background
Canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a common parasite of dogs worldwide. Heartworm occurs in about 30 other species as well but rarely affects humans. The infection is commonly transmitted by mosquitoes. Adult heartworms can grow to be up to 10 inches in length and can live for 5-7 years in dogs affecting the heart and lungs.
