Integral membrane protein. Golgi and endoplasmic reticulum. Bound to Notch1 which is also at the cell surface.

Background

Beta Amyloid peptide (40-42) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimeris disease. The generation of beta Amyloid from Amyloid Precursor Protein involves beta- and gamma- secretases. Recent evidence suggests that presenilins are part of a large gamma secretase complex and they may form the catalytic component of the proteolytic activity. The presenilin proteins are multi transmembrane spanning proteins and are predominantly found in the ER and early Golgi. The presenilin proteins also seem to have a sigificant role in the processing of the Notch receptor, which is critical for cell-fate determination during embryogenesis.
