Product Note
This antibody recognizes the SC5b-9 complex of around 330 kDa. Both the classical and alternative complement pathways result in the formation of the cytolysis inducing C5b-9 complex. This complex is composed of 190 kDa C5b, which is bound to cells via 71 kDa C9. Sublytic assembly of C5b-9 on plasma membranes induces cell cycle activation and survival. The binding of C5b-9 to the 75 kDa S-protein (or vitronectin) in the fluid phase prevents C5b-9 from assembling on the plasma membrane, deactivating it and forming the SC5b-9 complex. SC5b-9 is stable in vitro and is, therefore, a reliable indicator of terminal complement pathway activation.
