Background

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs, or GPRs) contain 7 transmembrane domains and transduce extracellular signals through heterotrimeric G proteins. GPCR TGR5 is a member of this family (subfamily: bile acids) and is implicated in the suppression of macrophage functions by bile acids. TGR5 expression has been reported in a wide variety of tissues, especially placenta, spleen, and monocyte/macrophages.
