Human papillomaviruses (HPV) infect differentiating squamous epithelium of the skin and mucous membranes. These viruses are categorized into high-risk or low-risk strains depending on their pathogenicity and carcinogenic risk. High-risk HPV strains account for approximately 5% of all human cancers and are associated with cervical, anogenital (anal, vulvar, vaginal, and penile), and head and neck cancers. Most notably, two specific high-risk types, HPV16 and HPV18, are responsible for roughly 70% of all cervical cancer cases worldwide.

HPV belongs to the Papillomaviridae family of small, non-enveloped, circular double-stranded DNA viruses with a genome size of approximately 7-8 kb. The genome is segmented into an upstream regulatory region (URR), an intergenic noncoding region (NCR), and eight primary ORFs coding for the early (E) and late (L) proteins. The early region encodes the non-structural proteins E1, E2, E4 (E1ˆE4), E5, E6, E7, and E8 (E8ˆE2), while the late region encodes the two capsid proteins L1 and L2. The E6 and E7 proteins, classified as oncoproteins, promote and maintain cancers by fostering cell proliferation, hindering apoptosis, undermining immune surveillance, promoting cell invasion, and disrupting the balance of cellular metabolism. E5 functions as an accessory oncoprotein.

To support HPV research, GeneTex provides a comprehensive catalog of highly validated antibodies targeting critical HPV antigens. These antibodies are optimized to deliver high sensitivity and specificity across a wide range of analytical platforms, including WB, ICC/IF, ELISA, and LFA.
