Neurotransmission is the process in which a neurochemical signal is transmitted from one neuron to an adjacent neuron. Neurotransmitters are released by the presynaptic neuron, travel across the synaptic cleft, and then bind to and activate receptors on the postsynaptic neuron. There are many different types of neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine, amino acids (aspartate, GABA, glutamate, and glycine), monoamines (dopamine, histamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine), trace amines, purines and a variety of neuropeptides.
